...phenomenon unto himself." Starting in the 1950s, rebel philosopher-poet Egon Bondy drew followers with his surreal fiction--published and distributed covertly--which offered veiled, witty critiques of his country's Stalinist government. But the weirdest and most influential role the vocal Marxist played was as the inspiration and lyricist for a seminal Czech underground rock band, the Plastic People of the Universe. The arrest of the Plastics at a 1976 rally sparked Charter 77, the Havel-led protest movement that in 1989 toppled the communist regime...

...there was one Hollywood figure who appreciated Hutton's talents, and who matched her drive with his, that would be Frank Loesser. As lyricist or total songwriter he authored dozens of movie hits before graduating to Broadway and composing the scores for Guys and Dolls, A Most Happy Fella and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. He's also the subject of a toe-tappingly terrific new bio-doc, Heart & Soul: The Life and Music of Frank Loesser. ...Parks performing, and the video can’t decide which version of the keyboardist it likes best. We end up careening between multiple iterations of the same musicians, massed before neon-hued backgrounds. Part of the band’s personality problem stems from lead singer and lyricist Paul Smith. He’s dreamy enough to be a frontman, but he’s saddled with an unblinking intensity that can’t help but unnerve fawning girls. While his winsome lyrics bring Split Enz to mind, his clenched, discomfiting stage presence recalls Joy Division?...

...Slept With Someone” is by no means the worst offender in the score. The lyricist rhymes “them” with “them” within the first 20 seconds of the first song. During Laura’s supposedly poignant breakup ballad, “The Things We Could Have Been,” she compares her and Rob’s problems to “an elephant that won’t leave the room.” These songs will fall flat for both fans of Rob?...
