...Planning snafus haven't helped. One plan after another - by the Urban Land Institute, the mayor's Bring New Orleans Back commission, even New Urbanist architect Andres Duany's efforts - has fallen by the wayside in what Kroloff calls "the longest-playing comedy of errors." No one, including Nagin, has been willing to say clearly which neighborhoods shouldn't be rebuilt, or can't be provided city services. "The mayor so far has not demonstrated a willingness to make anyone unhappy," says John McIlwain, a senior fellow who worked on the ULI plan. Kroloff, who headed the failed BNOB planning...

...just the highest standards of magazine quality but their many tight deadlines. Michelle and Gemma both perform their roles with great good humor, and I am a grateful and admiring beneficiary of their professionalism. Depending on whom you talk to, Australia's Highway 1 is the world's longest road, its longest continuous highway, or the longest without crossing a national border. Truckers Darren Schneider and Rod Bryson couldn't have chosen a more dramatic place to stop. But having turned off the 90 Mile Straight, "Australia's Longest Straight Road," in the early hours of the morning en route from Melbourne to Perth, their three-carriage Kenworth inexplicably shuts down. A misty dawn reveals an endless vista of saltbush: They're bang in the middle of an ancient seabed stretching 700 km from South Australia's Head of the Bight west to Balladonia. Nullarbor translates as "no trees" in Latin, and for the moment the truckers are without a clue. "Usually...

Here are the surnames of some ministers in the new South Wales Labor government, Australia's longest-serving current administration: Iemma, Costa, Sartor, Della Bosca, Roozendaal, Orkopoulos, Hatzistergos and Tripodi. It's a wonderful achievement for them - and for Australia - that after only a few generations migrant families have seen their kids make it to Parliament. This immigrant upward mobility in politics is one of the things keen observers from New Zealand comment upon when they visit. (Kiwi politicians come in two flavors, not a good sign in a small country prone to exporting its talented people...
