...chemist and now to the psychiatrist, lithium is a fascinating substance, the lightest of all the solid elements. Its compounds have had a discouraging history in medicine. Last week, however, lithium carbonate was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of mental patients in the overexcited mania phase of manic-depressive psychosis...
...Psychiatrist John Frederick Joseph Cade. After 3½ years as a prisoner of war, Cade began to work in a mental hospital at Bundoora, near Melbourne, concentrating on possible biochemical differences be tween the manic and depressive phases of the same patient. Nothing was farther from his mind than lithium, which had been discredited as a hypnotic and again in 1949 as a substitute for table salt. "One can hardly imagine," says Cade, "a less propitious year," especially as the work was being done "by an unknown psychiatrist, in a small hospital, with no research training, primitive techniques and negligible...
...darkened chamber with a flickering brick fireplace. As you climb onto a bed, you are rolled like a tortilla into sheets soaked in a steaming brew of "21 exotic Oriental herbs." When done to a spicy turn, you plop into a hydrother-apeutic bath frothing with sesquicar-bonates, lithium chloride, magnesium sulfate, hexachlorophene-everything, presumably, but cyclamates. He next made a tender offer for shares in far bigger Bunker Hill Co., an $83.2 million-a-year Idaho mining and smelting company. Bunker Hill spurned Allen's overtures, began dickering with two other prospective part ners. Undeterred, Allen coolly bought up its stock on the open market, by last February had a commanding 36% interest. The battle of Bunker Hill over, shareholders...
...acquisition of Lithium Corp. of America made Gulf Resources, in a single stroke, one of the world's largest producers of lithium, a superlight metal that, in various forms, is used in such disparate products as laundry bleach, synthetic rubber and swimming-pool disinfectant. Lithium Corp. also has a stake in a venture to extract potash and other minerals from Utah's Great Salt Lake. Bunker Hill, meanwhile, is one of the U.S.'s biggest producers of zinc, lead and silver. By acquiring it, Gulf Resources also strengthened its profit position, since Bunker Hill had earnings last...
