Professor Sophocles stood by collegiate seniority, third in the list of the Faculty of Harvard college, being between Professor Loveting and Professor Torry. Some printed authorities place the date of his birth 1807, one going so far as to say the 8th of March, but there is reason to doubt the accuracy of this, although it is undoubtedly nearly correct. He would never in his life give any information about himself for publication. ...Pall Mall Gazette thus comments on the English game of foot-ball :-"The heavy list of casualties reported from the two universities last Saturday will revive the protest against the dangerous character of foot-ball. And yet, in spite of all protests, the game increases in popularity, notably at the two universities and round London. A hundred and twenty matches are now played in the suburbs where thirty or forty were played fifteen years ago. and in the north the system of county matches makes rapid strides. Is the game more dangerous than it was ? Most of the accidents occur...

This volume however contains several important changes and additions. For the first time the Total Abstinence League appears with a list of officers and members. The Philological Society disappears, but the Philosophical Club still remains although it has ceased to exist as a college organization, as its members are limited to graduates-we believe, however, that this club has shown some signs of life within the last few days...
...latter part of the book is taken up with a list of the college athletic associations, among which the Polo Club appears for the first time, and with the customary athletic records. These have been carefully prepared and important additions have been made in giving the best Harvard records and the measurements of the '86 crews, besides the measurements of the university crew. We should prefer to see the athletic associations given preference in point of space to the Harvard Clubs which are not very important to the students and could well be placed at the end of the book...
