Unfortunately, not much progress toward peace has been made in more than 2½ years. Only tiny, easily negotiable slivers of territory in the Sinai and to a lesser extent along the Golan Heights have changed hands. The Geneva Conference remains stalled, and Washington has still not addressed itself to the region's central problem, the Palestinian issue. By trying to ride two camels at the same time, as it were, the U.S. risks the prospect of falling between them. If a new war breaks out, for instance, both Israel and Egypt may demand arms airlifts...
...June 1972 U.S. Supreme Court decision against capital punishment. Immediately following the decision, the Florida high bench ruled that if there is no capital punishment, there can be no capital offense. Hence, first-degree murder (which normally has no statute of limitations on prosecution) was reduced to a lesser offense and made subject to a two-year statute. In December 1972 the state re-enacted the death penalty and put capital offenses back on the books. Unconsidered was the fact that arrests for any murders that took place during the five-month gap would still have to be made within...
...Dolomite foothills northeast of Venice, an Italian resort area and scene of bitter World War I battles. There 20 villages were badly battered by a light shock, followed by a major quake that lasted 55 seconds and measured a severe 6.9 on the Richter Scale; eleven more lesser tremors followed over a three-hour period. More than 700 people were killed under falling rubble before the shocks subsided...
Adam Winthrop and, to a lesser extent, the other Winthrops in the book are in fact the author himself, thinly veiled. The contractual sense of mission dominates the book as it does Auchin-closs's life. Related both by marriage and blood to the Winthrop family, trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, leader in the Century Club and the Downtown Association, Auchincloss prides himself on being an arbiter elegantiarum. So it is with authority that he writes about his Winthrop kinsmen, worthy judges of men and manners of their own times...
...John Campbell Butman to forswear innovation, since whatever happens on stage will be new. Butman also abandons much of the elaborate stylization which shaped the performances in this fall's production of Iolanthe, encouraging his leads to act with greater naturalism and leaving the contorting and caricaturing to the lesser characters...
