...mood goes, mellow is a far more appropriate adjective. Each song is contemplative and smooth, but no track is dynamic enough in its own right to ever truly distinguish itself. The title track comes close, but never fully peaks. Also of note are the poignant, emotive "Less Than Strangers" and "The Only One," a haunting arrangement featuring Emmy Lou Harris on harmony vocals. Most of the other tracks have a tendency to blend into one another. However, while Chapman's stories may not be of the genre that motivates deep discussion and reflection, they're certainly quality bedtime reading...
...before launching into "Lost in Space," their theme song from the 1999 movie of the same title. It wasn't the most auspicious of choices for an opener: just as that movie disappeared without receiving much of an audience, the manic energy of the lead singer dissipated among the less than 100 people who turned up. Poor publicity might have been to blame for the empty-looking floor: while they were on tour to promote their new album Getting High On Your Own Supply, word about the concert was rather last-minute. ...male neighbor as having PGL, or Pointless Good Looks. Her mother Sadie and her friend Brendan have the funniest roles, a fact that neither actor takes for granted throughout each of their great deliveries. However, former husband Davie Marshall (Derek Nelson), young boyfriend Grant, and friend Alice have considerably less well developed roles, something which limits them despite their considerable acting talent. Always enjoyable, though, is the play's soundtrack-a pastiche of love songs spanning the decades. By the end of the last song, you will probably find that Perfect Days has definitely kept you entertained. Just...
...with Jude and Shazzer. As they work their way through their various relationships, that friendship is both funny and genuinely warm. The casual acceptance of smoking, alcohol use and sex (aside: could Renee Zellweger, recently cast as Bridget, duplicate this very British aspect of Bridget?) shows that Bridget is less high-strung than Ally McBeal, the inevitable object of comparison. And some genuinely hilarious moments pepper the novel: going to Mark Darcy's house and finding a "lithe oriental boy, stark naked, smiling weirdly, and holding out two wooden balls on a string and a baby rabbit...
