...race between the Weld and Newell Freshman crews yesterday, over the regular mile and seven-eighths course down-stream, the Weld crew won by about three-quarters of a length. The official time was 10 minutes and 30 seconds. The conditions for the race were most favorable, there being besides the ebb tide, a strong, west wind blowing directly down the course. For the entire distance the race was closely contested, and at no time was there more than a quarter of a length of open water between the boats...
