...third Freshman crew defeated the second Middlesex eight by half a length over the half-mile course on the long stretch above the Stillman Infirmary yesterday afternoon. At the start the Freshmen got away first with a short high stroke, and for a short distance led by about a quarter of a length. But Middlesex, with a longer stroke, soon caught up and until near the end of the course both boats were even. At the finish the Freshmen spurted and crossed the line a half-length ahead...

Both races were rowed over the regular Henley course of one mile and 550 yards. In the New England Challenge Cup race, Harvard finished a length and a half ahead of Pennsylvania and Columbia in 7 minutes, 9 1-5 seconds, the latter two crews tying for second place. The second University crew won the Stewards' Challenge Cup race in 6 minutes, 52 1-4 seconds, defeating Georgetown by three-quarters of a length. The Wanderers...

...were unable to row as high a stroke as the second University crew and even when the latter lowered the stroke to 35 at the middle of the course, it continued to gain on the other two boats. At the last half-mile, Harvard was three-quarters of a length and a half. It was a dead heat between Columbia and Pennsylvania for second place. The crew rowed fairly well in this first race but showed a tendency to finish weak. There was slight head wind which accounted for the time being slower in this race than in the second...
