Subtle Torture. When Annapolisman Schwable returned to the U.S. after he was released. Marine Corps Commandant General Lemuel C. Shepherd, a first-class fighting man himself, pointedly refused to see or speak with him. But few of the colonel's fellow citizens allowed themselves so simple a reaction...
After years of trying to deal with Communist employees through the National Labor Relations Board, giant General Electric Co. is getting tough on its own hook. Before a Senate subcommittee on internal security last week, Vice President Lemuel R. (for Ricketts) Boulware announced that G.E. has already suspended (with pay) 17 of its employees who ducked behind the Fifth Amendment when asked about their Communist connections by congressional committees. When Colonel Frank Schwable, U.S.M.C., arrived in Washington last month, he promptly went around to pay his respects to Marine Commandant Lemuel Shepherd. Schwable never got past the front office; hard-bitten Lem Shepherd angrily refused to see him. Last week the Marine Corps announced that an investigation was under way in the case of Colonel Schwable, Annapolis man, regular marine of 24 years' outstanding service and the highest-ranking American P.W. in Korea to confess to the Communist fantasies of germ warfare...
