Last week set a record. Former Republican Senator Paul Laxalt of Nevada, an active player since spring, abruptly quit. There just was not enough campaign money to go around, he said. Ohio Governor Richard Celeste ended his brief toe dipping in Democratic waters, explaining he could not do his duty to Ohio and a presidential campaign simultaneously; Cuomo made the same argument in February. Others, including two Arkansan favorite sons, Senator Dale Bumpers and Governor Bill Clinton, have pleaded family concerns. Gary Hart, chased out for his lack of such family concerns, last week tentatively decided to end his quirky...

Last week, beneath the majestic 13,060-ft. mountain, Nevada Governor Richard Bryan and former Senator Paul Laxalt, along with other dignitaries, dedicated the surrounding 120 sq. mi. of wilderness as Great Basin National Park, the country's 49th. Named by Explorer John C. Fremont, the area known as the Great Basin stretches across northern Nevada, touching California, Oregon, Utah and Idaho. Once an inland sea, it was formed 20 million years ago by geologic plates thrusting sediment layers upward into mountain ranges. The relatively small national park contains nearly all the Great Basin's ecosystems, from desert to arctic...

...Laxalt's urging, the Reagan Administration, normally cool to such environmental overtures, went along. One reason: Laxalt helped negotiate "multiple use" privileges for cattle grazing and valid mining claims. Even so, it will take years for the new park to become fully operational, says Superintendent Al Hendricks. Hiking paths are barely marked, roads often too bumpy for cars, and campsites have no potable water. Rangers are still taking inventory of plant and animal life, charting soil types and reviewing mining claims. The public has taken a role in park planning through a series of town- hall meetings. Among the suggestions...

After three acrimonious years, Republican Presidential Hopeful Paul Laxalt and the McClatchy Newspapers last week finally settled the lawsuits each had brought against the other. So who won? While Laxalt dropped his $250 million claim that the McClatchy-owned Sacramento Bee libeled him in a 1983 story about a Carson City casino-hotel his family once owned, the former Nevada Senator declared that pretrial investigations found no evidence of illegal skimming. And while Bee President-Editor C.K. McClatchy dropped a $6 million countersuit, he maintained that his paper had never reported there had been skimming -- only that IRS agents suspected...

...Similarly, marital fidelity by itself is not going to be a big draw. Instead, these will probably prove to be what pollsters call "threshold issues" -- standards to which the candidates must measure up simply to stay in contention. Some candidates will have more difficulty than others. Nevada Republican Paul Laxalt, for instance, was once part of his state's gambling industry and is still pressing a libel suit against a newspaper chain, which, he claims, falsely implied his involvement in casino skimming. Robertson suffers indirectly from the turmoil among fellow televangelists and directly from an accusation that...
