...pizza at Rocky's Sub Pub, a neighborhood hangout, where he learned to make fresh dough. "That had to be where he got his basics from," says Pat Reel, a current Rocky's manager. "You can't just say, 'Here's the recipe, go do it.' There's a knack...
Schnatter perfected that knack while tending bar in Jeffersonville after graduating in three years from Ball State University. He took a sledgehammer to a broom closet and knocked out space for a small pizza kitchen, which soon grew into a business that became Papa John's in 1985 and went public in 1993. But his demanding manner was not to everyone's taste. No fewer than five top executives, including the company's president, quit in 1995 and 1996, in part because of Schnatter's brusque management style. Says Cheryl Bachelder, executive vice president for marketing at Domino...
DIED. CLARK CLIFFORD, 91, consummate Washington insider; in Bethesda, Md. Tall, elegant and impeccably attired, Clifford advised four Democratic Presidents, using a knack for crystallizing issues to advocate causes from civil rights to environmental protection. An architect of Harry S Truman's 1948 election victory, he later counseled winding down the Vietnam War as Lyndon Johnson's Defense Secretary. Says TIME's Hugh Sidey: "He had a genius for reducing things to their simplest terms but fell to a tragic and false sense of invulnerability." Clifford's chairmanship of a bank embroiled in international scandal led to 1992 criminal charges...
DIED. DANE CLARK, 85, actor and self-described "Joe Average" with an uncommon knack for portraying sympathetic tough guys; in Los Angeles. The no-nonsense, Bronx-born Clark, who found stardom playing sailors and soldiers in such World War II-era films as Destination Tokyo and God Is My Co-Pilot, also acted on Broadway and television. DIED. STANISLAV REMBSKI, 101, prolific portraitist with an economical style that masterfully evoked the spirit of his subjects; in Baltimore, Md. Among the best known of Rembski's 1,500 works were posthumous portraits of Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt, the latter...
...inspired pairing: as composers, both men have a knack for knotty yet supple melodies, and Costello's bitter takes on romance are not far removed from the sometimes jaundiced eye of Bacharach's best partner, lyricist Hal David. Two years ago, Costello and Bacharach co-wrote the song God Give Me Strength, included here, for the film Grace of My Heart. If only the rest of this album were up to that stunningly well-crafted peak. Bacharach brings out a new directness in Costello's singing and verse, but the millstone is cloying production. These engagingly sinuous tunes deserve better...
