...More Children for China? In his facile commentary "The Family Way," Joshua Kurlantzick makes ending China's one-child policy sound as easy as baking a cake [June 9]. He airily dismisses the economic and other benefits of controlling a cripplingly high birth rate. Certainly, some consequences of the one-child policy are repellent from a First-World perspective, but emotions and poorly thought-through conclusions make little contribution to informed debate. Kurlantzick implicitly contradicts himself, foreseeing "a [future] severe labor shortage" while reminding us that in the past, "unequal sex ratios, which left men idle, contributed to armed rebellion...
...Pass the Cockroaches, Please Re "Eating Bugs": how about advocating for a more palatable vegetarian future [June 16]? I've been a vegetarian for 37 years. I'm 61 and strong and healthy enough to compete in 100-mile (160-km) mountain-bike races, ski, climb and dance all night with my wife. I've been living extremely well on rice and beans for protein, tofu, tempeh, fruits, greens, grains and 40 g of fiber daily. Meat and dairy products cause obesity, heart disease and other ill-health consequences. Eat vegetarian for yourself and the planet, and join...
...Obama's Radical Friends Essayist Michael Kinsley argues that it is "absurd" to make an issue of Barack Obama's relationship with unrepentant Weather Underground bombers Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn [June 9]. If this association exposes Obama as a radical or "a man with terrible judgment," Kinsley writes, then the same could be said of many respectable people who have also not shied away from Ayers and Dohrn. But none on that "respectable list" proclaim their superior judgment, as Obama does. More importantly, they are not running for President. Jonathan Karsh, Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania...
...Hillary: For and Against I am a die-hard feminist. If I read or hear one more story about why some women did not vote for Hillary Clinton, I will scream [June 16]. A reason largely ignored by the media is that we did not think she was the best candidate. It had nothing to do with ovaries or high heels. Lauren F. Cardillo, Alexandria, Virginia...
...Israel PEACE, THIS TIME Following months of mediated negotiations, Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas declared a June 19 cease-fire, agreeing to end hostilities and discuss issues such as the reopening of Gaza's border crossings and the return of Israeli prisoner Gilad Shalit. Officials are optimistic, but amid memories of the failed 2006 cease-fire and last-minute attacks from both sides, including an Israeli air strike in Khan Yunis, above, extensive efforts will be required to maintain the peace...
