...clothes had been taken care of. Somehow, into two trunks and five suitcases the Auriols had managed to cram two full-dress suits, 30 dresses, two morning coats, a dinner jacket, three business suits (blue and dark grey) and some of those fiendish French shirts that button up the back. Although both of the Auriols are homebodies, they like elegance at official dinners. Three weeks ago crates of choice wine, silver and Sevres china were shipped off to the French embassy in Washington for the dinners which the Auriols will give there...

...commodore sticks to his guns, even though they aren't loaded; Farbridge has its festival, a merry one indeed, and the former naval person devolves into the arms of a wealthy, amiable semi-lunatic. All of which, says the book's jacket, "proves that life's worth living." The evidence may be a bit thin for the claim, but the book does demonstrate again that Author Priestley is a good judge of characters if not of character, and unquestionably one of the most fluent, enthusiastic word-jobbers in the language...

Sartorial appearance is the first concern of the Skiman. The effect should be that of cosmopolitan carelessness. It will be noted that only the amateur Skiman lets ski-two tickets congregate on his collar or belt. The true Skiman's jacket is bare and somewhat battered. In advanced cases, a small shoulder-patch, reading "Innsbruck," is permissible. This is the famous "Sturm and Drang" technique; it give the Skiman a chance to explain that his skis were...

...dust jacket of this book sales-mindedly describes it as one of "real interest for the general reader . . ." By and large it is not. But, though it will never replace the Hymarx for Government 1, this book does fill a long-felt need for a largely impartial analysis of the theoretical roots of the British Labour Party...
