...that matter, so do the horrors. They are too much of a bad thing. The reader soon longs for Newman to interrupt with some sustained comment and analysis. What generalizations he does provide are unexceptionable but also unexceptional ("We are all safer when language is specific. It improves our chances of knowing what is going on"). In his 207 pages, there is scarcely as much intellectual substance as George Orwell offers in the 15 pages of his celebrated 1946 essay Politics and the English Language...

...company of romance in its incipient stage, studying for Janet is definitely a lot more fun. She and Donald interrupt their reading occasionally to talk about material in the books, to mix drinks, to change albums. Even at our most solemn corporate event--a full House meeting--it is hard for any speaker to hold the attention of the audience for long before suffering a barrage of interjections...

...promote, not these impersonal poems, but the two singles most like Mitchell's previous outpourings of love and love's conflicts. "In France They Kiss On Main Street" is a catchy song which revels in young love--"amour, mama, not some cheap display." The other single, "Don't Interrupt The Sorrow," appeals to animals if not to fight at least to rise; each distinctly narrated verse repeats the melody...
