...line of targets swung into position, a line of Treasury pistols cracked, and better than nine out of ten of their shots pierced the 3¼-in. bull's-eyes. Best individual shot among the Treasury's men was an affable, red-faced Scotsman, Lee E. Echols, inspector at the New York Customs Bureau. Last week he let smugglers know how dangerous life can be by shooting 299 out of a possible 300 to defend his individual championship. ...Waiter Berry insisted he had filled the pitcher from the hotel's regular water supply, that no one came near him in the elevator or corridors as he took the pitcher to the Governor's room. Had some treacherous atmospheric lasso twisted up from the gullied Montana slopes to haul Flight Four to earth? To these and other questions, Inspector Niemeyer was at week's end seeking the answers...
...Party. Il Duce's news-organ Il Popolo d'Italia laid the law down recently: "Excessively fat members are undesirable in the Party ranks. . . . Their hearts, minds, nerves and muscles are all Fascist, but their bellies, no!" To Rome last week were ordered 45 special secretaries and inspectors of the Fascist Party. In the Forum Mussolini, with Il Duce watching, with pantherlike Fascist Secretary Achille Starace leading, the testees swam, jumped through blazing hoops, leaped from springboards over hedges of bayonets, tanks and armored cars. Casualties: Falls on bayonet points for two secretaries, a scorching for another...
