Twenty-seven men responded yesterday to Coach Mitchell's call for University fielding candidates by reporting at the Baseball Cage. Those who came out included many of last year's regulars. The infield will be complete except for third base, a place left vacant by the graduation of H. R. Hardwick '15. The outfield will only have two regular outfielders, F. P. Coolidge '16 and F. G. Fripp '16. Fripp did not report for practice yesterday because of trouble-with his knees. He is expected back in a short time, however. Another valuable man who is not out regularly...
With the return of seven "H" men, all of whom were regulars on last year's team, the outlook for the season is very promising. In the infield, every position will be taken by a veteran except for third base, which is left vacant by the graduation of H. R. Hardwick '15. Prospects in the outfield, however, are less bright, as there are only two regular outfielders left in college, F. P. Coolidge '16 and F. G. Fripp '16. The other regulars were lost by graduation last June...
...left hand side of the infield offers the problem which must be solved to produce a championship team. If R. R. Ayres, who was captain of last year's nine, until forced to resign on account of illness, can be persuaded to come out for the team, he will undoubtedly hold down the hot corner. Ayres is in College, but at present plans to take his degree at mid-years. W. J. Murray '18, who captained last year's Freshman team, will probably be found at third if Ayres does not report. B. C. Cartmell '16, who was substitute shortstop...
...year started with excellent prospects. Graduation lost to the team two valuable men in Captain D. J. P. Wingate '14 and S. P. Clark '14, and their withdrawal left a bad hole to fill at the keystone position of th infield. However, there seemed to be abundant material with which to fill the emptied places, for last year's second and Freshman teams had developed a number of promising candidates. The outlook at early practice was very bright...
...plate will be found two catchers of marked ability. Both Hunter and Harte are men who have made creditable records; Hunter has the better throwing arm while Harte has the better reputation at the bat. In general, the University probably has a slight edge on the battery; has an infield which may not field as well but which should do better at the bat; and has a trio of outfielders who as a whole excell the Yale men by reason of their records as hitters...
