...Mecca and visiting religious leaders and heads of state in Africa and the Middle East. There his beliefs moderated considerably. In Mecca he had been impressed with the genuine brotherhood between people of different colors: "I never would have believed possible--it shocked me when I considered it--the impact of the Muslim world's influence on my previous thinking." He no longer indicted the race of "blue-eyed devils" as a whole, emphasised cooperation instead of conflict, and abandoned the idea of the total separation of the races...

...impossible. Unnecessary because those for whom the CRIMSON would buy the system will not have ballistic missiles for a decade--in the case of China--and are not about to attack us--in the case of France. Impossible, because even a limited system would eventually have no less impact on Soviet offensive preparations than the prospect of a minor Soviet defense is already having on our offensive weapon expenditures. Long lead times for the construction of deterrent forces being what they are, both sides would, for all practical purposes, have to accept a minor missile defense as the thin edge...

...conducts bomb-electronics research for the AEC. Sandia scientists promptly requested all available accident data from the task force. With other experts, they pored over interviews with surviving B-52 crew members and witnesses on the ground; they studied Air Force wind-velocity records and the ballistic characteristics and impact points of the three recovered H-bombs. By feeding complex equations into computers, they projected trajectories backward from the impact points and established the precise location of the collision-the point from which the missing bomb began its descent...

Back at their computers, other scientists of Sandia determined that the radioactive contamination of Spanish soil had been caused entirely by the two recovered bombs that had broken apart on impact. Had another bomb shattered on land, the level of radio activity would have been higher. Thus the scientists assumed that either the missing bomb had not broken apart on hitting land, or it had fallen into the sea. Further ballistics analysis and wind data enabled the Sandia computers eventually to plot the probable trajectory of the missing bomb and locate where it had hit the water. Their calculations tended...
