Though there is some potential for imagination in the visual conceptualization of the play, what it usually comes down to, clean and simple, is the acting. And in this respect, the recent HRDC production acquitted itself well: all the actors rose to the occasion, doing justice to the delicately drawn characterizations...
Reminiscent more of a high school theatrical than an HRDC production, No Bull was undeniably amateurish, both in its script and its staging. The sung lyrics were adequately funny, but the spoken dialogue, in its attempts at wittiness, wanted the finesse that characterizes even the most canned Broadway concoctions. The music was for the most part deftly scored and generally quite suitable for the purposes of musical comedy. Unfortunately, it ended up sounding dismayingly cacophonous in the hands of the orchestra, which was consistently squeaky, poorly unified and out of tune. Most of the cast members were obviously not experienced...
...Baal (Arts, March 21), I was disappointed that the writer misunderstood or just plain missed so much of the brilliant production put on by Brett E. Egan '99 and Sam C. Speedie '99, but I've long since become used to Crimson reviewers being overly critical of some of HRDC's finer shows...
Upon opening October 3rd's Crimson, an article entitled "Sitcom Schizophrenia Seizez HRDC" caught my eye. I read the article carefully, so as not to jump to any conclusions. There is no mention of the mental illness schizophrenia in the article itself, only in the headline. The article dealt with a play about a family some of whose members have imaginary friends...
Thus it was that Kate deLima began what must be, barring intervention by a philharmonic Ad Board, her last season of HRDC glory, at the Agassiz Theatre last weekend.
