...filmmakers would seem less likely candidates for TV than Lynch. His first feature, Eraserhead, was a dreamlike horror story about a couple taking care of a monstrous mutant baby. Blue Velvet, his bizarre 1986 black comedy, started with a severed ear and descended into sadomasochistic horror. Trained as a painter, Lynch has written song lyrics and directed a performance piece, Industrial Symphony No. 1, featuring a midget sawing wood and dozens of baby dolls lowered from the ceiling...

...warning of the dangers of ambition, so fiction of the supernatural often tends to be subtly antimagic. The underlying message in each case is the inherent peril in man's playing God. The two genres are cunningly fused in the rich and absorbing new novel by Clive Barker, a horror writer (The Books of Blood, Weaveworld) and filmmaker (Hellraiser, Nightbreed) who is branching into fantasy. The serious mood with which the show closes does not adequately redirect the focus of the audience...

Director Kathryn Bigelow is Hollywood's suavest young stylist. Trained as a painter, she brings glamour, precision and thrill to every image. This film, bound as it is by action-movie conventions, hasn't the originality of her stunning horror drama Near Dark, and toward the end Blue Steel spins goofily off track. But it has a handsome time getting there, propelled by Curtis' sensible sensuality and Silver's bravura creepiness. These two help dramatize the danger any woman can find in the desperate intimacy of a big city. By the climax, Megan has to be thinking of Eugene...

...possibilities are endless, and I could definitely top them with horror stories of my own. Although nobody would confuse me with Ms. Omniscient of the Globe, reverse-advice attrition might just be the wave of the future. If people were willing to listen to Morton Downey, Jr. scream at them, they are open for anything...
