Devil's Advocate, despite its acerbic humor and visual style, is nothing like "Scream," which set the new standard for all horror or semi-horror flicks. Though the very premise of this film involves a satirical jab at the legal profession, the movie doesn't ultimately match the sly wit of Scream or the films from which it borrows. The ending, in trying to be both clever and moralistic, comes off as manipulative and uninspired--in other words, too conventionally Hollywood. It's a huge let-down after a fun build...
Consider, for example, Scene IV.ii, in which we meet Macduff's wife and son for the first time, watch them engage in a tender family scene--and then are forced to watch in horror as they are murdered by Macbeth's soldiers. In this production, the pantomime of a soldier stabbing the child (played by Aaron Goldberg '01), his cry of "He has killed me, mother!" and his immediate collapse into lifelessness was greeted by the audience with a burst of laughter...
This kind of news is hard to cope with. First comes shock and a flash of retaliatory rage. Then the mind begins to subdue itself to a state of sullen depression--reflecting that these things happen all the time, and always have. There was the double horror just the week before involving first an older man from Long Island and a 15-year-old from New Jersey he had met through the Internet and sexually abused, and second that same abused 15-year-old who then raped and murdered an 11-year...
Thus my reaction to the Dunster House tragedy, which occurred at the end of a semester I spent recovering at home, mixed hope with horror; while my condition might have gone unnoticed, surely something of such an extreme magnitude could have led to real and positive change. In the years since, those hopes have proven to be largely unfounded. Harvard has done much to repair its image, but little to prevent a future tragedy...
