...recent weeks have shown that a remarkably wide spectrum of Hong Kongers do not see the territory as just an "economic city"?as many officials (both mainland and local) and some tycoons in Hong Kong still insist it is, or should be. There's been a politicization of the hitherto apolitical middle and professional classes. Hong Kongers have signaled clearly that they regard the territory not only as a place to make money and then split for gentler political climes but as a permanent home for themselves, where their children and children's children can one day lead full lives...

...outbreak of monkeypox in the Midwest, the first ever to hit the western hemisphere, left more than threescore sick. A far less lethal relative of the smallpox virus, monkeypox has hitherto been endemic only in Africa. So it came as little surprise when health authorities traced the outbreak to 28 prairie dogs in Milwaukee, Wis., destined to become household pets, that had come into contact with an infected giant Gambian pouched rat while in transit with a distributor. ...Hitherto unknown, at least by me, Henrik Rehr seems to have come from nowhere with a natural, realist drawing technique and a clear, seemingly effortless narrative style. Wisely conservative, Rehr knows that the dramas of that day need no enhancements. The advantage of drawing such events seems clear: they are indescribable. It really has to be seen to be believed. But Rehr doesn't just focus on the external, he smartly takes time out for flashbacks and interior monologues, giving variety to the storytelling and visuals. While the ultimate lesson of Henrik Rehr's "Tuesday...

After U.N. inspectors revealed last week that Iraq had failed to disclose some information about its weapons programs, Secretary of State Colin Powell said Iraq was again in "material breach" of U.N. resolutions, bringing the U.S. closer to war. Material breach, hitherto an unfamiliar bit of legalese, today is the preferred euphemism for "liar, liar." It's just one of several words and phrases that took on new currency...
