...Reagan's trip to Europe as a pleasant presidential peregrination filled with photo opportunities. His ten-day itinerary includes both statecraft and diplomatic theater: a state visit to West Germany, the economic summit meeting in Bonn, a royal fete in Spain, a speech before the European Parliament in Strasbourg, high-level meetings in friendly Portugal. Reagan's theme will be "accentuate the positive," and in his remarks and speeches he will emphasize the 40 years of peace, amity and (relative) prosperity since...

During a two-week tour of Canada in May 1983, Gorbachev impressed officials with his straightforward, modest approach and his grasp of agricultural statistics. "Unlike other Soviet figures, he didn't need a brief," says a high-level Canadian official. "He was a quick learner." At one point, then Canadian Agriculture Minister Eugene Whelan bluntly told Gorbachev that he hoped the Soviets would continue their system, because "as long as you do, you will remain inefficient and will be the best market Canada could have." A week earlier, King Hussein of Jordan and P.L.O. Leader Yasser Arafat had agreed on a joint approach to the Palestinian problem. The accord, the text of which Jordan released last Saturday, predictably called for Israel to withdraw from the territories it occupies. But the agreement also offered a conditional acceptance...
...novel in the Administration include U.S. Information Agency Chief Charles Wick, outgoing White House / Deputy Chief of Staff Michael Deaver and the brass at the Defense Department. The Soviet embassy in Washington has reportedly bought several copies, presumably for shipment to Moscow. The object of all this high-level interest is The Hunt for Red October, a sea thriller about spooks and submarines by Tom Clancy. Currently in its fourth printing, the book has been on the capital's best-seller list for 15 weeks and is inching toward the charts in other major cities. Paperback rights have been sold...
