Blade Runner, like its setting, is a beautiful, deadly organism that devours life; and Ford, the cockily engaging Star Warrior of Raiders of the Lost Ark, allows his heroic stature to shrivel inside it. In comparison, Hauer's silver-haired superman is more human than human, and finally more complex than Ford's victimized flatfoot. Because of this imbalance of star roles, and because this drastically recut movie has a plot that proceeds by fits and stops, Blade Runner is likely to disappoint moviegoers hoping for sleek thrills and derring-do. But as a display terminal...
Within hours, dozens of Israeli tanks and armored personnel carriers were parked a few hundred yards from the Presidential Palace in Baabda, five miles southeast of Beirut. Looking dazed but delighted, Israeli troops were hailed as heroic liberators by the Christian residents, who showered them with rice, flowers and candy. Local merchants calculated a rate of exchange between Israeli shekels and Lebanese pounds (4.3 to 1) as the arriving soldiers queued up to buy souvenirs or get haircuts. Porter Professor of Slavic and Comparative Literature, emphasizes Finley's "elegance of expression...

What is not is the flatness of Schwarzenegger's performance, the dullness of his odyssey. Instead of the giddy lift one sometimes obtains from improbably heroic adventures, one gets a grim endorsement of the uses of primitive mysticism and brutality. Conan is a sort of psychopathic Star Wars, stupid and stupefying. -By Richard Schickel
Uncle Scrooge never had the high-style sizzle of Superman or Prince Valiant, or the cockeyed melodrama of Dick Tracy, but the mock-heroic sweep of Barks' stories and the whimsical clarity of his drawing made a heavy mark on a generation of children for whom comic books offered a powerful mythology. That mark shows up in some unlikely places. Barks' stories, as Film Director George Lucas points out in his affectionate Appreciation, are "very cinematic. They...don't just move from panel to panel, but flow in sequences-sometimes several pages long." Fans of the Lucas...
