Saturday afternoon the Freshman football team tied with Phillips Exeter Academy on Soldiers Field, neither side scoring. On the offensive the Freshmen were superior to Exeter, but both teams were weak on the defense. The Freshman backfield was fast, especially Gregory, right half-back, who showed himself a good ground-gainer. Exeter's ends were faster than d'Este or Browne. Vaughn for Exeter did good work running back punts...
...Before and after the scrimmage the line men were given hard practice in blocking and breaking through under the direction of Coaches Marshall and Knowlton. Four new men reported at this practice: J. W. Brown '08, centre; M. Dore '09, centre; T. Roosevelt '09, end; and H. Tweed '07, half-back. In the scrimmage, which was particularly fast and spirited, Burr was tried for the first time in his old position at left guard. Kerans, who was put in at quarterback on the first team, ran the eleven well. On the offensive the University team showed decided improvement, rushing...

Lincoln '08 was hurt last fall and was too light. He has thickened up considerably and must be reckoned within the coming season. P. C. Lockwood '07 was used as fullback only in an emergency. He is fast, however, and may be developed into a halfback, J. W. Wendell '08 will be available for halfback if he fails to give satisfaction at end. For fullback C. Appollonio '08, who was ineligible last year...

Following his season as halfback on the Freshman team in the fall of 1901, he was taken to the University squad, but did not get into the game as a member of the University team until the following year when he played substitute right half-back in the Yale game. For the past two years he has played regularly in that position...
...game. In the attack he may always be depended upon for substantial gains, and in the defense he is the best player on the team. Mills at fullback, is a hard plunging back, sure to gain ground in line plunges, and very effective in the secondary defense. Sperry, left half-back, will do the kicking this afternoon. His punts have fair distance and medium height, although in the latter respect they vary somewhat. In carrying the ball he is usually reliable. His chief fault lies in weakness on the defense. Starr, at quarterback, handles the team well, and shows good...
