...What Lies Beneath? PACKING HEAT. It's time for serious sidelong glances. An Internet site is selling a line of undies called THUNDERWEAR for those who like their firearms up close and personal. Just tuck your gun into the secret pocket. (You can choose from various pocket sizes depending on whether you're slinging a .44 magnum or a mere "Saturday-night special.") In China, meanwhile, inventor Zhao Xin attempted suicide because of the failure of CHASTITY UNDERWEAR, which guarantees fidelity through a built-in combination lock. Zhao never got a patent approved, and perhaps it's just as well...

Hannibal had his elephants, Rommel had his panzers and Bill Heinecke has his pizzas. And the pizza war is every bit as brutal as those fought by bow or musket or machine gun. That's why Heinecke, 52, astride a Harley Davidson FX, is leading a squadron of 700 motorcycle delivery boys mounted on Hondas and Yamahas through Bangkok's Siam Square shopping district to publicize the launch of his new Pizza Company chain. But as he revs the engine on his hog, even this veteran of numerous thick-crust and double-cheese campaigns has his doubts: "What...

...airliner was at 2,700 m in clear sky, some 30 km off Hainan's east coast. At about 8:40 a.m., two Chinese fighters suddenly appeared. The aircraft were later identified as Lavochkin LA-7s, Soviet-built prop-driven fighters. For no apparent reason, the planes opened machine-gun and cannon fire. The DC-4's captain Philip Blown tried evasive action, hurling the DC-4 into a steep dive. But the airliner kept taking hits. Syd's Pirates: A Story of an Airline (Durnmount, 1983), by retired Cathay senior captain Charles "Chic" Eather, documents the attack. Eather...

...Machine-gun fire raked down the passenger aisle and into the cockpit, wrecking part of the instrument panel. Bullets tore into the back of the plane's engineer as he tried to help the two pilots get the shuddering plane under control; he died on the spot. Another blast killed a stewardess. Barely two minutes after the attack began, Blown wrestled the burning DC-4 onto the ocean surface. Miraculously, a dinghy appeared among the debris. Nine survivors struggled aboard. As rescue planes alerted by Blown's Mayday message began gathering, the Chinese government warned colonial Hong Kong's British...

...seems to me unthinkable that Adam I. Arenson '00-'01 would use the horrible tragedy in his neighborhood school to advance his "anti-Bush" political agenda (Opinion, "Intolerance and School Violence," March 8). He neglects to mention that California has the strictest gun regulations in the United States, and his attempt to play the "race card" is totally inappropriate--the shooter wasn't even in Arenson's neighborhood long enough to absorb the alleged culture of racism that Arenson proposes is the root cause of this random act of violence...
