Some 150 years ago, Pirate Jean Lafitte found the Cajun country of the Louisiana Gulf Coast, with its network of swamps and its 6,000 miles of inland waterways, a congenial place to evade the law. Today a new group of lawbreakers has discovered its convenience: drug smugglers. Since October, more than 250 tons of marijuana have been confiscated in the New Orleans area, three times the amount taken in the entire previous year. Huge busts of 20, 30, 40 tons or more occur regularly, but authorities estimate they are intercepting only about 10% of the traffic...

Rita Schwinghamer saw a newspaper story announcing that the town would be sold at auction the following day by its owners, a family of local ranchers. "We thought it would be a good idea to buy," says Rita. They did not have time to visit Navajo, a 250-mile drive from Phoenix, but did look it up on a map. Their bid of $615,000 was the best submitted by eleven prospective buyers, including a Baltimore nightclub owner who wanted to turn the town into a haven for retired strippers...

Admirers of 18th century Italian music are indebted to Scimone and his group for their part in rekindling enthusiasm for the Mediterranean treasures of the period. The Rampals, of course, have been outstanding influences in the current popularity of classical flute. The mechanical clarity they bring to Vivaldi's refrains is another in a long line of Rampal victories through air power...
