Subtle Punch. The wagon missed no side roads. In Hubert Humphrey's Minnesota, Kennedy men were working for an endorsement from Governor Orville Freeman and from Humphrey himself. Only a short time after erstwhile Candidate Humphrey told a group of delegates that "in fact, as I have listened to Kennedy speak, I don't see how I even had a chance," a Kennedy newsletter turned up in Minnesota with a picture of Hubert and Jack, captioned with the same quotation...
...scene at the U.S. Army's Mechanical and Technical training center at Fort Belvoir, Va. looked more like a visit to the fun house than serious military business. In a darkened classroom, a group of G.I.s peered blindly around trying to identify mysterious sounds, then put on infrared glasses and saw a jet plane overhead, a Jeep picking up a wounded man, an enemy infiltrator creeping toward them. In another room a model missile aircompressor system went whoomp, shooting a miniature missile ceilingward. In a third, a miniature carbon-dioxide plant emitted a cloud of gas and strewed bits...
After 18 months' preliminary study, the Colorado group decided to work on three central ideas, divided into the "blue, yellow and green courses." The blue, or physiological approach to biology, will emphasize the underlying cellular activity in all living matter; the yellow, or morphological approach, will compare the structures of organic types; while the green, or ecological approach, will trace the evolution of forms and how they relate to one another. Specific species and experiments will fit into the overall pattern, not dominate the course...
...basic courses are worked out and preliminary tests written, the biologists will put their ideas to classroom test. Later this summer, ten volunteer students will try the courses and offer criticism. This fall the new methods will be tested in 105 selected high schools around the U.S.; the group will do more revising and expand the test to 500 schools in the 1961-62 school year. By the summer of 1962, A.I.B.S. expects to have its material well enough in hand to put into final textbook form...
Behind the Wall. In time Barnes assembled the world's greatest collection of Matisses, the largest group of Cezannes outside the Louvre, and over $50 million worth of art by Picasso, Braque, Gauguin, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, John Marin, Georgia O'Keeffe and Ben Shahn. When his collection outgrew his home and factory, Barnes built a marble temple to house it in suburban Merion, surrounded the place with ferocious police dogs and a ten-foot "spite wall." Ostensibly the collection was a public institution, entitled to tax exemption, but the tiny part of the public that...
