...team is largely staffed with ancients and has-beens. Regular First Baseman Earl Torgeson, 35, had not done much since 1951, when he drove in 92 runs for the Boston Braves. Third Baseman Billy Goodman, 33, had a brief moment of fame nine years ago, when he won the batting title with the Red Sox. Early Wynn, the team's leading pitcher (18-9), is a creaking 39. In the bullpen are Turk Lown (9-2), a late-bloomer at 35, and Gerry Staley (7-3), 39, who seemed washed up six years ago with the St. Louis Cardinals...
...subject of the story is Ernest Loring ("Red") Nichols (Actor Kaye), a hot cornet and well-known bandleader of the late '20s, whose "Five Pennies" -Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Miff Mole, Jack Teagarden. Peewee Russell, Fud Livingston and Wingy Manone all worked for him at various times-were later worth their weight in greenbacks. In real life, Red missed the big money in the '30s and made a comeback in 1944. His film biography is heavy with heroics and sentimentality, but Satchmo is almost worth the price of admission. At 59, he still grins...

There are still gold-hatted, high-bouncing young men who know their way to the washroom in the Union Club. In his resplendently gold-jacketed first novel, Yaleman Goodman, 23, lists a few undergraduate acolytes who keep the torch flaming: "Lawlor Reck, who had won the Charleston contest at the Everglades Club in Florida for six years running . . . one of the Du Pont boys...
...note to his publisher, the writer of this ironic romance observes that "I guess I'm the least known author of my ability in America." The titles of some of his previous books (Gestalt Therapy, Art and Social Nature) suggest why. But in this novel, Author Goodman shows an impressive gift for fiction. His prose is strong-flavored and exact, his comedy is caustic. Still, for all its humor, The Empire City bulges like a diplodocus. The first of its four overlong, sometimes aimless books was begun in 1939, and Goodman says he may yet write another volume...
