...these is the Smokehouse, www.thesmokehouse.com.my/ch.htm, built in 1939 and a surreal dream of English suburbia, with its impeccable lawns and heavy wooden beams. Originally created as a getaway for safari-suited colonials stationed in what was then called Malaya, the Smokehouse remains steeped in another era, in good ways (antiques, cozy nooks and crannies, double scotches by the fireplace) and bad (shabby rooms, peeling paint, awful food). The hotel website even refers, rather sniffily, to "electronic mail." There's something very old-school British about all of this, of course. Lovers of luxury may be disappointed, but children...
...definitive chronicler of the underworld. This project promised to be the crowning achievement of a Chicago kid steeped in the lore and chivalric code of the bad guy. "Camp Not Exactly Roughing It" at Pines Lodge in Beaver Creek, Colo., is a deluxe three-night getaway, with unlimited fly-fishing casting clinics, Frisbee golf, boccie and hiking, plus two lift tickets for scenic chairlift rides up Beaver Creek Mountain and lunch at Spruce Saddle. There are summer-camp-themed treats, like s'mores cocktails, granola parfaits and ants on a log served up (that's celery sticks filled with peanut butter and topped with raisins). Berkshires Bounty. The white clapboard Gateways Inn in the Berkshires town of Lenox, Mass., was built as a summer home in 1912 and designed by Harley Procter of Procter & Gamble fame to resemble a bar of Ivory soap. Today, it's a lovely place to base a weekend getaway to the Berkshires - come here to hike around the waters of the Stockbridge Bowl, listen to the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood or tour The Mount, the home of Edith Wharton. The Gateways's innkeeper, Fabrizio Chiarello, keeps a collection of more than 200 single-malt whiskeys in the hotel's restaurant...
...Quite Roughing It. In California's Giant Sequoia National Monument, there's a getaway-from-it-all camp resort - you'll have to hike a mile just to get to your canvas cabin (but it's an easy mile). Once you get there, however, the Sequoia High Sierra Camp will pamper you with proper beds, down pillows, rugs and reading lights in your own canvas bungalow. You won't have to carry in your own food - three meals are served daily in the camp's open-air lodge. The resort opens June 19, with rates starting at $250 per night...
