...entry of the United States into the world-war and the quick response on the part of the gallant little republic of Cuba naturally places the people of Porto Rico in a difficult position. It is especially embarrassing for us Porto Rican students in this country, who are enjoying the hospitality of the American people and who cherish highly the personal friendships of its citizens, to have to lie idle while our classmates and friends are making war preparations. Our apparent indifference is so apt to be misunderstood and hastily labelled ungratefulness, especially as contrasted with the action taken...

Despite the familiar material utilized, the book is interesting and its story is coherently told. The plot centers on the attempts of the gallant and worldly-wise (and, as usual, much in debt) Captain Poildeau to find "The Beautiful Unknown," and gives in the running of its course opportunities for various characterizations in both serious and comedy fields. Charles Purcell as Captain Poildeau sings and acts in his usual manner; Miss Follies as "the daughter of the regiment" is dainty and sings prettily; and Miss Odell does an excellent bit of acting in the bazaar scene. ...There is however, an exceptionally patriotic group which, deliberating thoughtfully over the fact that the German government is sparing no means at its disposal to draw our country into the ranks of its enemies, and over the fact that 200 American lives have been the victims of its gallant navy, has come to the conclusion that "national honor is not the issue in the present controversy with Germany; and national honor is not to be defended by retaliation," but by the more convenient expedient of typrwriter diplomacy. Ever guided by its high humanitarian ideals, this patriotic body of Harvard...
