...student's time in college by dictating certain courses which must be passed before the more advanced work of the professional schools can be taken up. Undoubtedly students whose college life is thus narrowed by early specialization lose some of the broadening influence which it is the function of the college to impart. Carried to its extreme this demand by scientific schools for students who are at entrance already well grounded in their special subjects might defeat altogether the object of college training...

President Maclaurin presented a most interesting paper on the function of the technological school in furnishing rapidly growing municipalities with the highly trained experts who are now sorely needed in the permanent positions. He prefaced his remarks by a cordial reference to the service of Harvard men in the administration of the Institute of Technology, and especially to that of President Lowell who, he hoped, would long retain his membership in the Institute's corporation. To this he added that, in those fields of work in which Harvard and the Institute seem to come in contact, it was the firm...

...editorial columns, though spiritually without blame, are not thoroughly alive even in treating new problems. They are disfigured, too, by such expressions as "broader leavening function" and "unconsciousably." Mr. Greene's "Harvard and the Nation" makes known much important truth; Professor Wambaugh's excellent exposition in the series called "Choice of a Profession" will scarcely help the Cincinnati delegates,--most of whom are already sentenced for life,--but to a hesitating Senior it may prove invaluable. ...well understood that whenever tickets are put on sale for any class function, by far the greater part are bought on the last day of the sale. But even this state of affairs cannot fully explain the small number of tickets purchased so far for the Senior picnic. This annual jaunt takes place next Tuesday, and as a legal holiday and absorbing athletic days intervene before that time, we are taking this occasion to remind the Seniors of the advisability of buying tickets at once...

...class of 1910 is apparently to be depended on for devising new varieties of class functions. Last year a pop night in the Union was held in place of the customary dinner in Boston, and the innovation proved a complete success. Over 300 men were present, in contrast to the small number usually attending class dinners after Freshman year. Now the Juniors are making another experiment by substituting a strawberry night for the annual function. Affairs of this sort are always valuable as a means of bringing the men together, and the new schemes seem to be particularly enjoyable from...
