...first time since 1950 (with Stage Fright), Hitchcock has filmed a B-picture script. Screenwriter Brian Moore fails to create a well-motivated plot, or even convincing cloak-and-dagger device. Like most of Hitchcock's "adventure" films, as he describes them, Torn Curtain's script is built around set-pieces: climactic scenes like the Mt. Rushmore sequence in North by Northwest or the music-hall finale in The 39 Steps. But with one magnificent exception, a grisly murder scene that borders on the hilarious, Torn Curtain's set-pieces don't work...
...moment, the trip was a fright. As Britain's Queen Mother Elizabeth, 65, rode into Christchurch, New Zealand, a shot cracked somewhere behind the crowd. Police raced through the neighborhood until they found four young boys playing with a rifle that had discharged, slightly wounding a housewife in the crowd. Unruffled, the Queen Mum went trout fishing in Lake Wanaka, catching nothing, despite her fine fly-fisher's wrist. She did set some sort of local record as the only angler who ever waded in wearing hip boots, sports jacket, and a large string of pearls...
Largo. Occasionally Horowitz finds himself seized with a sickening stage fright. He asks the manager of one concert hall to tell the audience that Mr. Horowitz cannot appear. Tell them yourself, says the miffed manager. Horowitz tries: he goes to center stage, looks out over the blob of faces, opens his mouth-and then dashes for the safe harbor of his grand piano...
...Leonie. Leonie is Morgan's wife, but she has just divorced him. His idea of wooing her back is to put a skeleton in her bed or to wire her boudoir with shattering hi-fi sound effects, hoping that her lover and husband-to-be may die of fright. He steals Leonie's car, nearly blows her mother to smithereens, finally has the poor girl kidnaped. After doing penance in jail, he turns up again at her dressy wedding reception in a monkey suit of real fur, beating his chest and uttering wild animal cries. Then-Well...
...every logical standard, inflation should be strong tonic for the stock market. But the market is not logical, and ever since inflation began to loom large, it has retreated in fright. The Dow-Jones industrial average has fallen almost 70 points since early February, and last week, in a frenzy of deep plunges and brief rallies, it lost another four points to close at 927.95. Wall Street is worried that the fight on inflation and the war in Viet Nam may oblige the Government to take harsh steps that will pinch prosperity.
