...glad on many accounts that the Freshmen have decided not to challenge Cornell. Taking into account the existing circumstances, it is probably just as well that a race with the redoubtable Cornellians has not been fixed for next summer. To be sure, our Freshmen lay themselves open to the charge of "cowardice" from Cornell, but so many charges of this nature come from Ithaca that '82 will not be alone in its ignominy! We certainly hope that the Columbia Freshmen will look favorably upon the challenge...
...with great regret that I saw in this morning's paper a statement that the Harvard Freshmen voted last night to invite their Cornell contemporaries to row a race with them "at New London," and I sincerely hope that some other locality may be finally chosen, in case the two classes really compete. Their presence on the Thames would tend to interfere with the perfection of the arrangements for the Harvard-Yale race, and is therefore earnestly to be deprecated by all who wish to see that race firmly established there as a regular annual "institution." PETITIONS granted this week: 32 Seniors, 49 Juniors, 69 Sophomores, and 61 Freshmen. '81 is still ahead, but '82 is proving a formidable rival...
...which have weekly runs, their last being over 12 miles in length. There are now several packs organized in New York with large memberships, and there is no better fun or better training than a good long spin after two good hares. One would think that the University and Freshmen crews would start some such thing, and meet once or twice a week. It is most splendid and thorough exercise, and far better for these men than plodding up to Fresh Pond or elsewhere at one uniform jog, and in funereal single file...
