...have black rappers, white rappers and--sacre bleu--French rappers too. It's not surprising then that the Teutons have finally caught on. In Austria, David Duke-ish politico JORG HAIDER, left, has cut a rap track called Carinthia Has One Heart, a break-beatin' homage to the beauty of the Austrian region and to his erstwhile constituency in the Far Right Freedom Party, which, for those of you who read only the People page, is not a lighthearted group. Haider's rhymes about Austrian natural beauty will be compiled on an album later this year, with proceeds going...
...Each artist in this exhibit makes reference to one of two motifs in the landscape tradition: the untouched romantic sublime exemplified by the Hudson River School and the carefully controlled nature exemplified by the formal French garden. In From a Distance, these hand-me-down conceptions are consistently subverted. The show is a visual diagram of a vicious cycle, of humanity's destruction of nature, and nature's unrelenting growth over humanity. Arturo Herrera's biomorphic felt wall sculpture, "Behind the House I," is the demonic overextension of romanticism's untouched sublime, displaying a terrifying kudzu-like growth which crowds...
...what is perceived as anti-social behavior. Between the Dark Ages and Columbian contact ? aided by the concept of Christendom ? Europe came to form an important element in the collective identities (that is the way people saw themselves as a group) of all western European peoples. The concept of "insider" gradually came to encompass the whole of the sub-continent...
...ELTIS: Early modern Europeans were, obviously, first of all French or Dutch or English or Spanish, but in addition had some concept of "Europeanness." Africans identified with some much smaller political/cultural/religious entity. The trauma of the slave trade and slavery meant that in the New World Europeans added "whiteness" to their self-concept. Africans on both sides of the Atlantic also broadened their concepts of collective identity. European colonies extended rights of denization (a preliminary to citizenship) to those coming from any part of Europe ? including Jews ? before such rights were available in the respective mother countries. Evidence from slave...
Material mom, faux East Indian princess, club-hopping sugar mama--Madonna moves from phase to phase with lunar remoteness. As on her last CD, Ray of Light, she continues to navigate her way through electronica, this time with French producer Mirwais Ahmadzai. Less adventurous than Ray, Music is more consistent. Madonna has to work hard to summon real emotion, but a few songs, including the skittery Don't Tell Me, manage a dry pathos. Locked in orbit high above mere mortals, she still has the power, on occasion, to turn our tides...
