...Sunset Boulevard. The setting has been shifted from northern England to 1950s Louisiana, which allows the mostly British cast--particularly the children--to offer up some of the weirdest Southern accents ever heard on stage. Yet the clash of Bible Belt bigotry and Elvis-era rebellion provides a credible framework for the parable about an outcast's redemption, and Whistle Down the Wind is more emotionally accessible and musically alive than anything Lloyd Webber has done in a long while...

Although the novel certainly does center on the travails of the narrator's family, in no way does that limit the interest of Deane's far-flung vignettes. Within the framework of the controlling mystery, Deane comments on everything from Catholic School to the violence plaguing Northern Ireland to this day. One of his most disturbing but beautiful scenes occurs when the narrator watches the men of the neighborhood set bonfires to burn rats out of defunct air raid shelters. Imagine the wonders he can work when satirizing a sadistically strict math teacher or when describing the ghost...

...economy from a planned to a market one has not yet taken place; the much needed privatization of industry and land reforms has been slow to progress in the face of vast squandering of land and capital. The result has been a quasi-market economy without a solid framework of law (much legislation is still in the making) and without private ownership of industry. Six months ago, the economy was said to have reached "the absolute rock bottom"--inflation was galloping at over 300 percent per month, interest rates were soaring, preceded by a bank run. All this coupled with...

...particle physicists, the answer hardly matters; the mere fact of neutrino mass will force a rethinking of the "standard model"--the theoretical framework of all subatomic physics. For cosmology, there could be even more tangible consequences. The universe is teeming with neutrinos--so many that trillions of them pass through every human being on Earth every second (fortunately, without doing any damage). Even a minuscule mass could give them enough combined gravity to slow the expansion of the universe that followed the Big Bang. They might conceivably even reverse it, leading to a cosmic catastrophe aptly named the Big Crunch...

...Aamir Abdul Rehman correctly concludes that framing the Israeli-Palestinian struggle in nationalist terms will produce no results. Both the assumptions and goals of any two nationalist philosophies inherently contradict each other; hence any discussion of international relations must be framed in an internationally accepted framework, possibly a moral...
