...GOOD deal of criticism, both favorable and adverse, has been passed upon the new Regulations of the Faculty, the general impression being that the University has made a step forward in allowing voluntary recitations to all. But there is one point which seems to call for some notice, and that is that all punishments are left unreservedly in the hands of one officer of the Faculty. The severity or lightness with which he may inflict punishment for continual "cutting," for instance, is unrestricted by any bounds, and he is at perfect liberty to take away the privilege of voluntary recitations...
LAST year we looked forward to the completion of Sever Hall in the hope that we should suffer no longer from a lack of ventilation in the recitation rooms, and we still believe that this end might be attained if the new rooms were assigned to meet present needs and not to comply with some rigid system which satisfies no one except the complacent inventor. If preference is given to any department, it ought to be that one for which Sever is best adapted. But this has not been done. It seems that room has been found in Sever...
...preparations for the performances of the OEdipus Tyrannus in Sanders Theatre, next spring, are being actively pushed forward, with every prospect of success. Professor White, as is well known, has undertaken the arduous task of general direction. The charge of the detail has been carefully allotted to other gentlemen, who will make a special study of the departments intrusted to them. Thus, Professor Paine will write the music; he has indeed already written the score for the first and second choruses. Professors Goodwin and Norton will attend to the costumes; Professor J. D. Allen to the dancing; Mr. John Wheeler...
...driving-wheel. Then away we went, and the heavy train leaped and jumped from side to side as we shot through the darkness. How white their faces looked at the car window, and how they screamed! I howled at them for very joy, and I felt the engine leap forward under me; they had cast off the train, and away we flew, the engine and I. Now the stations flew by, bright as live coals in a black, burnt desert, and the men shrank back as I flew away. There were lights ahead, a passenger train, hurrah! death is close...
...book trade? The students suffer by it, and the number is large of those who go to the city to buy when they hear that they can get what they want there. I think there is plenty of room in Cambridge for another bookstore. If no dealer comes forward to supply the demand for books at better prices, the professors should take the initiative and divide their orders between Mr. Sever and some one else. They have the power to furnish us with lowpriced books, and it is a shame that, having this power, they continue to allow and encourage...
