The protest, which drew about 350 people, was organized by the newly formed Harvard-MIT Divestment Campaign, a group of Harvard and MIT faculty and students who are petitioning for the two institutions to stop investing money in companies that benefit from or support the Israeli military.
Last Friday, a joint Cambridge-Harvard committee met for the first time to negotiate issues surrounding the tunnel construction. The committee had been formed at the request of the city council last month and the appointments were made by City Manager Robert W. Healy.
On Monday, the same day Healy publicly announced the committee’s membership, the neighborhood contingent submitted a letter expressing its dissatisfaction with how the panel was formed and how negotiations had progressed so far.
The seven-member committee—formed roughly three weeks ago by the Undergraduate Council—presented Summers with a four-page report compiled from student survey responses and the results of their own meetings and discussions.
Student organizers said the coalition formed around a common feeling that administrators have been unresponsive to student groups’ calls for change.
