...Washington, widely known as an educator and one of the most enlightened of his race, was born at Hale's Ford, Virginia, just before the Civil War. His ambition for knowledge led him to travel five hundred miles "by walking and begging rides in both wagons and in cars" to Hampton Institute, from which he graduated in 1875, later becoming an instructor there.
