...lack of spirit. Sard at point was ineffective and weak in the defense. Newhall at coverpoint played hard and did some effective body checking, but often failed to stop the puck by trying to cover too many men. Wilder and Pell at right and left ends neglected to follow back, and were weak in both passing and shooting. Callaway and Townsend, though quicker at following back, were inaccurate in their shooting. The stick work of all the forwards was poor and none seemed able to keep possession of the puck...

...score of 8 to 2. The playing of the University team was very ragged in all departments of the game. On the offensive the forwards seemed unable to keep up with the puck; while Wilder and Townsend were very slow in their stick work and did not follow back well. The defense was also ineffective, owing in great measure to the frequency with which Newhall left his position at coverpoint to play among the forwards. Tilden, moreover, was weak at goal. The Freshmen played aggressively, but were weak in passing and shooting. The line-up: UNIVERSITY TEAM. FRESHMEN. Grant...

Since the Columbia game last Saturday, the University team has improved materially in stick work and in ability to follow and keep possession of the puck. On the offense the forwards play together better, and in passing, especially across the rink, have become faster and more accurate. With the exception of Callaway they still fall, however, to follow back properly after losing the puck. The work of the men in this respect has been slow and ragged all season, and in a close game is likely to prove disastrous. The team is considerably weakened by the loss of Manning...

...game, but the team work of the forwards was in general more finished than in any previous practice this season. In stick work, passing and keeping possession of the puck, however, the men were deficient and often very careless. With the exception of Callaway the first team forwards rarely followed back after losing the puck, and until the men learn to follow back quickly and together, the effectiveness of the defense will be seriously impaired. Yesterday afternoon the defense showed fair ability in checking the second team forwards, but Newhall had a tendency to play too far out from...

...away to be stuffed with botany, geology, astronomy or metaphysics, but a cricket bat, a tennis racket, a football, an car, is put into his hands and he is taught to use it. And, then, when he comes to the university he has formed a habit and continues to follow his bent. The French boy studies or plays marbles in the streets; the German boy promenades the streets in droves, although now less than he used to do; but the English boy plays games of afternoons. What a blessing it would be if the lookers on could be shoved...
