Curious Public. The "prom" tradition goes back to the grand old days of Handel (1685-1759), but the London prom proper was just 60 years old last week. Word was circulating through the crowd: instead of being brass, the medals were silver. In a flash, bids rose to $1.90 a lb., later soared to $4.* Next day, the Air Materiel Command blushingly admitted an "administrative error," canceled the silver sales under a regulation prohibiting the Air Force from selling gold or silver as surplus property...
Count Your Change. A cash register that figures out how much change a customer should get was put on sale by The National Cash Register Co. After computing a regular total, the salesclerk rings up the amount paid by a customer, punches a "change" key, and numerals flash up to show how much is due. The new register also issues a receipt listing each item, the total, the amount given in payment and the correct change. Price: as much as $350 above conventional registers...
