The tuna ban is strongly opposed by many U.S. commercial fishermen, who worry that a prohibition of global trade in one of the most valuable species in the ocean would inevitably damage the industry. Republican Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine blasted the announcement, calling it a "reckless decision that will ultimately prove ineffectual and cause disproportionate harm to the U.S. bluefin tuna industry." ...What They're Catching in Kenya: Apparently there's an upside to living near pirate-infested waters: good fishing. In recent years, the illegal commercial trawlers that would loot the oceans off the Somalian coastline have stayed away due to the threat of hijacking. That's leaving local fishermen in Somalia and northern Kenya with outsize catches--red snapper, barracuda and oranda have all reportedly returned in large numbers--and, as a result, higher incomes and a better quality of life...
...strategic Chinese submarine base on Hainan Island, just over 124 miles (200 km) from Vietnam's eastern shore. The base has enabled Beijing to project its power not only in its own backyard, but further into the Pacific and Indian oceans as well. Last year, China detained 25 Vietnamese fishermen found near the Paracels, who were released only after weeks of demonstrations in Vietnam.
