...American G.I., peacekeeping's paradox is plain. Shooting to kill--something a soldier has practiced since basic training--is the best thing he can do in combat. But it's the worst thing he can do on a peacekeeping mission because an itchy trigger finger can spark civilian casualties, renewed warfare and national embarrassment. Since the cold war, which Russian and U.S. troops spent pacing in their garrisons awaiting World War III, military prowess has become a more subtle discipline. But subtlety has never been the U.S. military's strong suit, and no other modern military mission is as vexing...

...With each company pointing the finger at the other, however, it's increasingly difficult to get straight answers. Last week Ford admitted it had heard of tread-separation incidents with locally made Firestone Wilderness tires in Venezuela, as well as in Colombia and Ecuador, as far back as the fall of 1998, a year and a half before the company started replacing them on some 30,000 vehicles in the region. Some of those accused in the crime spree--including the bus hijacker...

This year, my brother-in-law Charlie Brind caught two muskies the first evening, small but comely, a propitious sign - except that one of the fish bit Charlie on the finger as he worked the hook loose. After that, nothing...
