And in choosing Cathy Freeman as the flame's final custodian, Games officials rekindled another hope. It was there in Freeman's eyes as the cauldron rose - a dedication not only to individual victory but to a collective one as well: to unity between black and white Australians. For a moment last Friday evening, anything seemed possible...

...champions. At his first Olympic Games, the 17-year-old Australian is driving through the water at Sydney's International Aquatic Centre like swimming's gift from the gods. "He was born to swim," said Italian Massimiliano Rosolino, who finished second to Thorpe in Saturday's 400-meter freestyle final. "I think he can still get better. Who knows? Fusion Music After the curtain went down three hours later, the Gore-Lieberman ticket plus wives and Hillary Clinton trooped onstage to thank the performers. Gore's final words summarized the mood. He exulted that he was touched by having some of the finest performers of his generation performing in honor of the ticket. The fusion between candidates, performers and supporters was complete. The '60s generation is now in sole charge. Now the electorate must decide which side was in the right in that long-ago revolutionary war, and whether it wants to be led by the people our parents...
