Medevacs removing the wounded, sentries monitoring the perimeter, soldiers shaving with whatever was available--Vietnam all over again. Until the U.S. leadership looks at our history, we will never learn from our mistakes. I was in the eighth grade when the first Tennessee soldier was killed in Vietnam in 1962, and 10 years later I was fortunate to return from service with the 1st Air Cavalry Division in Vietnam. Let's hope the decision makers review Ferguson's work while examining the war in Afghanistan...

...August, photojournalist Adam Ferguson, who has visited Afghanistan repeatedly to document the lives of U.S. infantrymen, landed there again, this time on assignment for TIME. His mission was to join Apache company, a detachment of 102 soldiers who had arrived a month earlier to establish a combat-operations post in the Tangi Valley, not far from Kabul. An incongruous strip of greenery between two bone-dry mountain ranges, the valley has become a flash point for the Afghan insurgency.
