...Olivares exercised the strongest influence upon him, and during the early years of the master's activity as court painter, he produced almost exclusively portraits of the royal family and of Olivares. Of the latter, unfortunately only a limited number are extant; the balance were destroyed when Olivares fell into disgrace in 1643. Though Olivares is younger in the full length portrait now at the Fogg than in the famous equestrian Prado picture, the likeness between the two is striking.
