There was a feeling of history in the making last week as the British House of Commons voted 473 to 47 in favor of the accord giving the Irish Republic a formal consulting voice in the governing of Northern Ireland. After the tally was announced, the Rev. Ian Paisley, a militant Protestant leader, shouted, "Ulster forever!" The next day, Paisley and fellow Democratic Unionist M.P. "This is clearly reform," asserted John Bryan, chairman of the Sara Lee food-products company. Terrance Olson, professor of family sciences at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, is using funds from the new program to develop a conservative sex-education curriculum. Olson's offering stresses abstinence, and, he says, "we try to involve teenagers with their parents in understanding the issues of marriage, family...

His earliest misstep, resulting in a brief period out of favor, was to ally himself with a party faction that favored basing the drive to power on rural rather than urban insurrection, then a departure from orthodoxy. The leading advocate of that strategy was none other than Mao, who was working in another province at the time and therefore was spared the humiliation Deng suffered Deng was rehabilitated in time...
