...what's wrong with a Republican-dominated state legislature ending a contest that the courts had five weeks to settle and couldn't? These people were elected by Floridians; if Floridians don't like what their representatives did, they can fire them. (Heck, they've even got term limits down there.) The politicians, maligned as they are, are just the people the founding fathers had in mind to regulate American elections. Who better than elected officials? At least we don't have to wring our hands about how they've become politicized...

...Many of those same voters know that clamping down harder on Palestinians doesn't solve the problem, and ultimately they'll be back at the peace table. And Israel's fractious and complicated parliamentary system allows a prime minister to win by a landslide but even then struggle to maintain a workable majority government (as Barak did). Now, Netanyahu looks set to return to the same booby-trapped office. But even having to govern via a traditionally fractious Israeli coalition government won't stop Netanyahu from keeping his foot firmly jammed on the brake of the peace process...

...irony is that Moscow is trying to build alliances to oppose the U.S., but they're not learning the lessons from Yugoslavia. There they tried to support Milosevic even though the Serb people were not keen to support him. Now that the Serbs have overthrown Milosevic, they'll probably turn to the West, which has a lot more to offer than Russia does. So there's a danger in Putin's strategy that when all of these countries open up and overthrow their dictators, they're all going to turn back to the West. What will Putin do then...
