...Sydney was so good, though, that even some of the marginal sports had glorious moments. No one cares about Olympic tennis, but Wednesday's finals in the women's singles and men's doubles looked to be compelling and I went out to watch. Venus Williams won again, so this year she won Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the Olympics. That's a pretty good trifecta. In the men's doubles it was the Woodies' swan song. ...there was all this, and I haven't even told you about the track meet. What an incredible track meet. It started, as I mentioned in my last letter, with Marion Jones and Maurice Greene winning the 100-meter sprints. The next big result, as you might have heard, was C. J. Hunter's. ...last point on all this drug business: Before the Games Frank Shorter - remember, the marathoner, now heading the new U.S. Anti-Doping Agency? Anyway, Frank Shorter told me that fans would accept a drug-free level, even if there were no world records set. I thought he was dreaming, but maybe he was right.
