...While Dr. Macartney at Grand Rapids was eulogizing Brooklyn the Methodists at Springfield (Mass.) assembled (TIME, May 12, et seq.), hammered out an anti-war doctrine. The strongly pacifist resolution (TIME, May 26) demanding that the Methodist Church dissociate itself from all war, offensive or defensive, was defeated. Pacifists led by Dr. Ray Allen, of Rochester, N. Y., and Dr. J. M. Gray, of Scranton, Pa., threatened to bolt the convention.
