Hamel's direction is skillful. Aside from occasionally awkward and distracting blocking, his staging is fluid. He trusts the script enough to allow actors to remain still on stage, letting the power of Cocteau's ideas hold our interest. Hamel should also receive the credit for an inspired set design, which beautifully highlights what Cocteau called the "false classicism" of this play set in the 19th century...

Steve Petersen and Jeff Branion as the drunken cohorts Trinculo and Stephano are the delightful exceptions in The Tempest, their comic rapport is as convincing as it is entertaining. And John Ducey as Caliban frequently conveys the pathos and grotesqueness of his character effectively. But their performances are not enough to redeem a production rendered in a dramatic monochrome...

...which escalates to laughter. At the end of the play, her "cunt," a voice characterization by another actress, begins to yell at the men, attacking them for their hypocrisy. Though I believe this final twist is meant to justify the previously presented misogynist attitudes and violence, it is not enough to counter the rest of the action of the play. The woman is eventually silenced--killed by a corkscrew...

Granted, lights should be turned off. But such efforts should not be regarded as major actions of resource conservation. Turning off the lights is fine. Dumping an armload of newspapers into a box in the hallway in fine. But such virtuous actions are simply not enough...
